Railport Arad becomes a hub for concrete sleepers manufactured in Poland that will be used in Romania
In collaboration with Track Tek Group, Railport Arad intermodal terminal in Curtici received and unloaded the first block train of concrete sleepers manufactured in Poland. These railway infrastructure elements are stored at the terminal and will be transported by trucks to various construction sites in the western part of the Romania where railway modernization works are taking place.
The start of this new intermodal project was preceded by a three-month preparation phase of technical, commercial, work safety, and operational tests. To handle the stacks of 25-ton sleepers, a gripping device was manufactured that attaches to the spreader of the mobile crane.
The operation – which is a first for an intermodal terminal in the Romania – took place on August 14, and due to its complexity, three companies from Curtici Cargo Center worked together to get it done. Trade Trans Combi did the shunting of the train from Curtici railway station, Trade Trans Terminal provided the forklifts with qualified personnel, and Railport Arad a rail track, the storage platform, and the reach stacker for handling the stacks of sleepers operated by an experienced crane operator. The block train had 29 flat wagons belonging to the Polish operator PKP Cargo, with two stacks of concrete sleepers loaded on each wagon.
The intermodal project that started now will continue with a frequency that depends on the progress of the modernization works of Romania’s railway infrastructure.
